Casting the quiet campaign

Close editorial portrait of a model against a pale background.

Houses say they want a quieter campaign and then cast the loudest available face, because the talent decision was made by someone who was not in the strategy meeting.

Quiet is not the absence of beauty. It is a picture that does not beg. Editorial casting — the Vogue standard, if we are being plain about the reference — is specific. The coat, the light, the amount of person in the frame. None of that can be repaired by a famous name.

We cast inside the brief. If the campaign is about leaving a city, the face cannot look like it is arriving at a party. If the work has to live in China and in the United States, the casting has to survive both readings without a costume change.

Bring the boards to the casting. If the talent partner will not look at them, they are staffing a different campaign.
